Flora and fauna

In this string of volcanic islands remain almost integral the species invisible, the insects. Are unfortunately extinguished all the wild species of earthly and sea Mammalia: for example the seal "monaca", sea Mammalia inhabitant of the submerged caves of the islands. Among the reptiles, there's the Biacco and is completely absebt the Viper. The sea Tartles, so numerous in the past, are now extinguished too. On the island of Palmarola and in rare cases also of Ponza it's possible admiring the peregrine falcon.
Ponza enjoys favourable element, both climatic and geographic, typical of the regions lapped by the Mediterraneo sea, even if the lack of raining during the sommer and the presence of the sea winds slow down the regular growth of the vegetation: the broom, the dwarf plam, the holm-oak, the Indian fig, the pine, the larch, the bamboo, the holly, the laurel....

San Silverio day

The 20th of June, San Silverio day, the biggest feast of the entire island of Ponza: this is for Ponza and all the inhabitants a day different from all the others. It's so important that in the second half of the last century, at Le Forna this feast was advances at the last Sunday of February to allow the fishers of Ponza (from the begin of March until the end of september they worked in Sardinia or Tunisia) partecipate and celebrate the Saint Patron. The celebration begins the 9th of June: during the night the beach of Santa Maria is full of hundred people. At midnight the boat with the vexillum, completely floodlit, comes out of the Punta della Madonna toward Santa Maria: as crown numerous floodlit boats all around it.

Gastronomy

The most typical dishes of Ponza are obviously of fish: langouste, cernia and morey, but not to forget also the "cicerchie", a kind of legumes cultivated on the island used to prepare delicious soup.
